Copyright records of works registered and documents recorded by the U.S. Copyright Office since January 1, 1978 may be searched in a catalog found at this link, as well as how to find information regarding earlier works. There is even a tutorial available:

Additionally, the Office of Copyright will do a search of a particular item for you, at the cost of $100-$150.00.
